Passage-1

Our opportunities are great but let me warn, you that when power outstrips ability, we will fall on evil days. We should develop competence and ability which would help us utilise the opportunities which are now open to us. From tomorrow morning from midnight today we cannot throw the blame on the Britisher. We have to assume responsibility ourselves for what we do. A free India will be judged by the way in which it will serve the interests of the common man in the matter of food, clothing, shelter and social activities. Unless we destroy corruption in high places and root out every trace of nepotism, love of power, profiteering and black marketing which have spoiled the good name of this country in recent times, we will not be able to raise the standards of efficiency in administration as well as in the production and distribution of the necessary goods of life.(153 words) Extract from a speech by Dr. S.Radhakrishnan (1947)

Passage-2

I was overwhelmed with gratuitous advice. Well-meaning yet ignorant friends thrust their opinions into unwilling ears. The majority of them said I could not do without meat in the cold climate.

I would catch consumption. Mr. Z went to England and caught it on account of his foolhardiness. Others said I might do without flesh but without wine I could not move. I would be numbed with cold. One went so far as to advise me to take eight bottles of whiskey, for I should want them after leaving Aden. Another ‘ wanted me to smoke, for his friend was obliged to smoke in England. Even medical men, those who had been to England, told the same tale. But as I wanted to come at any price, I replied that I would try my best to avoid all these things but if they were found to be absolutely necessary I did not know what I should do. I may here mention that my aversion to meat was not so strong then as it is now. I was even betrayed in to taking meat about six or seven times at the period when I allowed my friends to think for me. But in the steamer, my ideas began to change. I thought I should not take meat on any account. My mother before consenting to my departure extracted a promise from me not to take meat. So I was bound not to take it, if only for the sake of the promise.

Passage-3

He was a very regular correspondent. There was hardly a letter calling for a considered reply which he did not answer himself.

Letters from individuals, dealing with their personal and private problems, constituted a considerable portion of his correspondence and his replies are valuable as guidance to others with similar problems. For a great period of this life, he did not take the assistance of any stenographer or typist, and used to write whatever he required in his own hand/ and even when such assistance became unavoidable, he continued writing a great deal in his own hand. There were occasions when he became physically unable to write with the fingers of his right hand and, at a later stage in his life, he learnt the art of writing with his left hand. He did the same thing with spinning. Private correspondence, which absorbed much of his writing in this way, constituted an important and significant part of his teachings, as applied to particular problems of the ordinary man in his everyday life.

Passage-4

1. There are several reasons for a headache. Physical, emotional and mental factors, anxiety and tension are a few. Sometimes, headache can be a signal of an underlying disease. More than medicines, yoga therapy eminently suits any need. Yoga is a comprehensive mode of culturing the body and the mind. Using an ‘Integrated Approach of Yoga’, the Yoga Research Centres have been able to cure some tough headaches. The integrated approach includes breathing, asanas, pranayama, meditation and devotional sessions.

2. Yoga asanas, especially the ones imitating the natural postures of animals, have a tremendous tranquilising effect, without having to depend on common drugs. Pranayama inhibits random agitations in Pranic (energy) flows in Pranamayakosa, stabilising the autonomic nervous system. Dhyana and Samadhi culture the mind to relax it. This approach alters the reaction of an individual to headache. By interrupting the vicious cycle of pain-agony- pain, it prevents headache from becoming a crippling problem.

3. Through asanas that calm you, the pranayama exercises that inhibit random energy flows and the meditation that cultivates and relaxes your mind, yoga offers a holistic-form of pain relief. It stops you from becoming locked in the vicious circle of pain- anxiety-pain.

4. Chronic pain : Chronic pain essentially is imbalance in prana (energy). This imbalance initially manifests only as functional abnormalities like Insomnia, lack of enthusiasm, fatigue, increased irritability and lack of concentration. Over the years, the im-balance settles in an organ. Chronic pain may sometimes beust a long-standing muscle spasm, which later on may give rise to organic changes in the form of chronic inflammation.

Passage-5

1. India was once considered the land of knowledge and enlightenment. In ancient times scholars from all over Asia and Europe used to flock to Taxila, Nalanda and other Indian centres of learning. Apart from the arts, culture, philosophy and religion, these scholars came to study medicine, law and martial sciences. But despite having a vastly expanded university system and historical advantages, modern India has yet to provide international or even regional leadership in higher education. From the surrounding countries and Africa only a few students come to India for higher education.

2. The United States is by far the most successful country in attracting foreign students. But other countries such as Australia, Canada, and Britain also aggressively market their universities abroad through their education counseling services and recruitment fairs with the active cooperation of their diplomatic missions abroad.

3. Likewise, India should also capitalise on the advantages offered by its higher education institutions, market Indian universities abroad and facilitate the entry of foreign students into them.

4. The revenue from foreign students can be used to ease the financial crunch faced by Indian universities, improve academic facilities and subsidise the cost of educating Indian students.

5. But apart from economic advantages, many other benefits would accrue to the nation. India would gain global and regional influence, goodwill and become a major provider of higher education. Many Asian and African countries, especially the smaller ones have poorly developed university systems and would look to Indian universities for the higher education of their youth. At the same time Indian students will not be deprived if 10 percent supernumerary seats for foreign students are created in universities and professional colleges.

6. Already professional education in India has proved accessible and affordable for foreign students, especially from Malaysia, the Middle East and South Africa. In these countries higher education training facilities are limited. Many NRI (non-resident Indian) families abroad, especially those from English-speaking industrialised countries are also keen to send their children to study in their motherland and hopefully to become attuned to their Indian roots in the process.

Passage-6

1. Our house is filled with photos. They cover the walls of my kitchen, dining room and den. I see our family’s entire history, starting with my wedding, continuing through the births of both sons, buying a home; family gatherings and vacations. When my sons were little, they loved to pose. They waved, danced, climbed trees, batted balls, hung upside down’ from the jungle gym and did anything for a picture. But when they reached adolescence, picture-taking changed into something they barely tolerated. Their bodies were growing at haphazard speeds.

Reluctantly they stood with us or with their grandparents at birthday celebrations and smiled weakly at the camera for as short a time as possible.

2. I am the chronicler of our photographs. I select those to be framed and arrange the others in albums. The process is addictive, and as the shelves that hold our albums become fuller and fuller, I wonder what will become of them. Will anyone look at these photographs in future years? If my sons look at them, what will they think of us and of themselves? One bright afternoon, I took some photographs of my father with my husband as they fished on a lake near our vacation house. As my sons and I sat on the shore and watched them row away, I picked the camera up and photographed the beautiful lake surrounded by green trees. The two men I loved gradually grew smaller until all I could see were my father’s red shirt, and the tan and blue caps on their heads.

3. My father died a week later, and suddenly those photos became priceless to me. I wept when I pasted them in our album, I wept again afterward when I saw my younger son looking at them. It was a few days before he went away to college. He had taken all our albums down from the bookshelves in the den and spread them out on the carpet. It had been a very long time since I had seen him doing this. Once he stopped posing for pictures, he seemed to lose interest in looking at them. But now he was on the verge of leaving home. This was his special time to look ahead and look back. I stood for a moment in the hall by the den, and then tiptoed away. I didn’t take a photo of my son that afternoon, but I will remember how he looked for as long as I live. Some pictures, I learned, don’t have to be taken with a camera.

Question 1.

[1] Thanks to the radio and the television, advertisements have almost become an integral part of our lives. Even small children watch a TV ad (short for advertisement) with a great deal of interest, attracted by its visuals though they may not understand its message.

[2] Advertisements can be termed as the backbone of the commercial world. If a company or a firm has to popularise its product, it has to through various means, such as hand bills, posters, print media, and the television. Advertisements on the television make an instant appeal to people because of interesting visuals dramatising the product or service.

[3] Even government organizations use some ads to highlight their activities, achievements and future programmes. Ads also serve a very important purpose of spreading awareness about issues of public concern, such as compaigns against tobacco, AIDS and drugs and noble causes seeking help for victims of some natural calamity and so on.

[4] Today advertising has become a very powerful factor in our day-to-day lives, so we have to be watchful lest we are misled or misinformed by deceptive advertisements.

Those who prepare the matter for advertisements and for publicity are called copywriters. All of them are experts in conveying the message of their ads in short crisp sentences, slogans and eye-catching visuals. Some sample handbills follow.

[5] Since advertisements are making a great impact in all walks of our lives, care should be taken to ensure that they are not allowed to degenerate into cheap publicity. A democratic country like India gives every citizen and organization the freedom of expression. In a way, advertisers also avail themselves of this freedom and publicise their products, ideas, programmes, without any fear of legal action or punishments.

[6] But we should never forget that freedom is not licence. Some sort of regulatory mechanism is needed to curb any such tendencies on the part of advertisers that can cause more harm than good to society. If this aspect can be taken care of, advertisements can be most advantageously used for not only promoting commercial products but also for educating and enlightening common people about social, cultural and developmental issues of crucial importance.

The Second Chance Summary, Pronunciation & Translation

[1] A week ago, the unthinkable happened. Sudhir, who played left-out in the school’s hockey team, threw away a crucial goal. Not only did his team lose the match, it also lost the coveted inter-school trophy. For many days afterwards, Sudhir re-lived the nightmare.

Baljit, the tough, well respected coach had dinned it into their heads a good hockey player must convert the half-chances.

[2] Half-chance? Sudhir had missed a sitter. It was a perfect lob from Rajbir, the team’s back. Having slipped through the defence, the ball was in an ideal scoring position, not too angular. A gentle scoop by changing the body posture or a crack to the net from a better hitting position would have sealed the score.

[3] The goal keeper had charged early, leaving the goalpost not just undefended, but positively wide open and welcoming. In that single minute, the defence seemed to move almost in slow motion. Lazily, the seconds slid past giving Sudhir ample time to choose a scoring position. Then, for no apparent reason, he decided to use the reverse flick for which he had earned a sort of reputation. Part of it was the desire to show off. The other part was the challenge, the risk in raising the level of difficulty. Result : the ball hit the board from the outside. A sure goal was wasted or rather thrown away.

[4] The crowd bayed for his blood. His team mates would gladly have strangled him. An angry Baljit ordered him to sit out the rest of the game.

For a week Sudhir avoided the field. His teammates would gather for practice. But he lacked the courage to go in their midst and face the hostility and contempt that he felt he would be subjected to.

[5] “Sudhir, why have you not been attending practice?” a voice interrupted his brooding.
“I have not been well,” he mumbled.
“Isn’t that just an excuse for hiding after a disgraceful performance?”
It stung, as it was meant to.
“I did not play badly, “Sudhir said with some show of spirit. At that moment, he hated Baljit and his cool “oh, yes”,
Baljit said softly. “You missed a sitter. And, as if that was not bad enough, you have been behaving like a wimp ever since.

[6] “If you don’t know how to face up to your mistakes you should not venture into a game, any game.”

“Did you hear how they booed at me?” Sudhir asked, unable to hide the torment in his voice. ‘Did you see them laugh?”

“You deserved it, Baljit said calmly. “Everyone makes mistakes. Even terrible mistakes are excusable if you learn from them. But what lesson have you drawn apart from the one in self-pity? How will you teach yourself not to repeat that mistake ? Not by avoiding play, but by going into it with a determination not to repeat it. Now, enough of all this.

[7] Impervious to Sudhir’s despair, Baljit turmed away. Sudhir slowly made his way to the changing room. Surprisingly, his teammates were welcoming.

“Hi man! Nice to see you emerge from exile,” Naveen, the captain said, Baljit appeared again, chivvying them to get ready for the game.

[8] I have been shifted because now he thinks I am just not good enough, thought Sudhir sadly. I guess I deserve it. The game began. The opposing team was good and the first half of the game moved fast. The team attacked again and again, displayed good dribbing and executed excellent passes. But when it came to a scoring opportunity, players from both sides became hesitant, almost nervous. Baljit noted this thoughtfully. He particularly watched Sudhir. The boy was playing with a finesse he had never before displayed.

[9] At half time, the players huddled around the coach, waiting for words of wisdom from him, and the all important criticism.

“Well played, boys,” Baljit said and then tore them apart for their tardiness in scoring and all those lost chances. He was not unpleasant, just coldly analytical. A whistle shrilled to mark the end of halftime. The players began moving back to the field.

“Just a minute, Sudhir,” Baljit held him back. “Listen, son, you are playing well. So stop wasting your time and take a shot at the goal. You have not made even one attempt at it. Finally, the scoreboard is the only testimony to your talent. So, go on and score. Do you hear me?

[10] Sudhir was speechless. He had hoped that it would not be noticed; that he was trying his best to avoid scoring. He did not know why, except that the nightmare of the last week was still alive.

[11] His chance, the first one came when Naveen sent him a pass, a sizzling shot that defied interception and reached a little ahead of his right-in position.

Sudhir stopped the stinging hit with his stick and making a break with the ball, dribbled of past two players. He tapped the ball into a good scoring position and entered the D-area. His whack at the goal was a real beauty. The ball whizzed past the outstretched stick of the back and the padded legs of the goal keeper to hit the left inner board with a loud thud. It was a perfect field goal!

[12] Sudhir’s teammates thumped his back. Baljit shouted his approval and encouragement. Life regained its former healthy shape for Sudhir.

The game gathered pace. Sudhir’s team scored another goal this time it was from a penalty corner. But the real icing came in the dying minutes of the game, with the third goal. It was Sudhir, who scored again. He managed a solo run down the flank and dribbling past the defence was half turned away from the goal. It was not a scoring chance, but backed with his renewed confidence he was unstoppable. Scooping the ball with a reverse flick he had the opposition wooden on their feet, watching helplessly as the ball swung into the goal post.

(13] Sudhir looked across at his coach and grinned. Baljit shook his head in a ‘You will not improve’ gesture but he also had a big smile on his face.

This was the half-chance that Baljit kept talking about and Sudhir had scored by using the same difficult manoeuvre that had led him to miss a sitter in the last match. They won the match 3-0.

For Sudhir what mattered most was that he was back where he belonged on the field. And he was the happiest person.

Passage-1

Camps To Tap Creativity

1. As the dreaded examinations crawl to a halt, students look forward to the much-awaited “creative outlets”, the summer camps, to let off steam and spend their holidays. A summer camp is conducted over a short period of four to five weeks involving interesting and fun-filled activities. The colorful spectrum of summer camps provides a wide variety of activities which include artistic skills, such as painting, origami, art, music, craft and also spoken English, cookery and computer courses. Not only this, the summer camps keep the child “fit as a fiddle” by imparting lessons in yoga, cricket, tennis and swimming.

2. With changing, times and trends parents have become productivity-oriented. They want their children to learn through productive play unlike in the past when play was just played. Today, the parents want to tap the potential of their children to the fullest. To achieve this aim, the summer camps afford an ideal opening for children to develop their hobbies and talents. The importance of creative, play is often underestimated whereas the fact is that art and craft projects can excite even a young child’s imagination and promote a sense of great achievement. The little things that children make and take home give them a sense of achievement and pride when they show them to their parents.

3. Summer camps develop a child’s confidence and his ideas. They also encourage children to do things on their own. The camps are beneficial for hyperactive and aggressive children as they help channel their energies fruitfully by drawing out the best in them. They also promote mutual understanding not only among teachers and children but also bring about .interaction between the taught. This provides a good experience for a better future— a future of confidence.

On another night one of the wolves was killed by a bolt of lightning and this also was blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that lettuce-eaters cause lightning.

2. The wolves threatened to civilise the rabbits if they did not behave, and the rabbits decided to run away to a desert island. But the other animals, who lived at a great distance, shamed them saying, “You must stay where you are and be brave. This is no world for escapists. If the wolves attack you, we will come to your aid, in all probability.” So the rabbits continued to live near the wolves. And one day there was a terrible flood which drowned a great many wolves. This was blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that carrot nibblers with long ears cause floods. The wolves descended on the rabbits for their own good, and imprisoned them in a dark cave, for their own protection,

If we would see our dream of Panchayat Raj, i.e., true democracy realized, we would regard the humblest and lowest Indian as being the ruler of India with the tallest in the land This presupposes that all are pure, or will become pure if they are not. And purity must go hand-in-hand with wisdom. No one would then harbor any distinction between community and community, caste and out-caste. Passage-7

Getting a good night’s sleep can help you cope with stress more effectively. But not getting enough sleep can cause more stress. Insomniacs have higher concentrations of stress hormones than others.

Women are prone to sleep disturbances. Their sleep problems frequently interfere with their daily activities.

Experts believe that sleep, especially .deep sleep, enables our nervous system to function well. Without it, we lose our ability to concentrate, remember or analyse. Some experts speculate that during deep sleep, cells manufacture more proteins, which are essential for cell growth and repair of damage from things like stress and ultraviolet rays.

Scientists believe that activity in the area of the brain that controls emotions and social interactions lessens during sleep and that deep sleep may help people be emotionally and socially adept when awake.

Sleep may also help our brain to store a newly learned activity in its memory bank. In a study, Canada, students deprived of sleep after learning a complex logic game showed a 30 percent learning deficit when tested a week later compared with students not deprived of sleep.

The effects of sleep deprivation on other bodily functions are just as alarming. In studies from five medical centres across the country, researchers established that individuals with insomnia were also more likely to have poor health, including chest pain, arthritis and depression and to have difficulty accomplishing daily tasks. Another breakthrough study revealed that even temporary loss of sleep can affect the body’s ability to break down carbohydrates, interfere with the function of various hormones and worsen the severity of ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

So whatever works to help you sleep well, whether its regular exercise earlier in the day, weekly massages, yoga, meditation or a lavender-scented bath, make time for it today. (300 words)

Passage-8

1. We’ve just left the dinner table, when I hear music coming from my daughter’s computer. It surprises me that my daughter Ida is listening to music from a time she refers to as the very old days. “What are you playing?” I ask. “It’s Phi Collins,” is her prompt reply, while she shows how, with a few strokes, she can download almost any song from the Internet. limes have certainly been changing since I scratched my first Beatles record. Tactfully I don’t mention that I had bought the record she’s listening to before she was bom. The concept of a phonograph record belongs to a bygone age and I don’t want to spoil the pleasure she’ll get from discovering her “own” new favorite musician.

2. The music brings memories flooding back. I have a sudden urge to bring back my record collection from the attic, where it has moldered for almost a decade. Only one thing stops me: my turntable succumbed to the damp air in a cellar where I stored it for a good ten years. No, I don’t care if turntables are ancient technology: I will find one. And I will restore my long lost record collection which took up a good amount of shelf space to its former glory. Buying something as uncool as a turntable takes courage and planning. I find a promising TV and radio store in the phone book but I am expecting a mountain of questions from the clerk, who will most certainly have been born and raised after the demise of the turntable.

3. “A turntable? Coming right up!” says the young man behind the counter. He disappears into the storeroom and before I can say long-playing record, he’s back with a small cardboard under his arm. It’s too good to be true. An hour later my new acquisition is in the living room and a respectful atmosphere descends. I’ve sorted my records into piles all over the floor, I find a Beatles album.

4. Behind the wonderful music now flowing through the loudspeaker is die unmistakable sound of vinyl. It doesn’t take long for my twelve-year-old son’s* eagle eye to spot the turntable and he has to try it out.onas is technically minded, a child * of the computer age, yet I sense a certain reverence as he picks up the tonearm and tries to place it in the middle of the record. Brought up in the CD age how could he know what’s wrong?

I say in a soothing voice: “The starting, groove is on-die edge of the record.” “Does it matter which side is up?” queried my daughter. “It does matter,” I replied. Soon we were listening to a Phil Collins number we both like. The generation gap vanishes as the music takes over. I relish the moment to the full and cast a glance at Ida. She’s relaxed and smiling.
