[1] Kasturba Gandhi was the daughter of a prosperous businessman of Porbander (Kathiawar). She was married at the very young age of thirteen to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Her father was a strong believer in prevalent customs and traditions. He did not believe in educating her. After her marriage, it was her husband who taught her to read and write. In 1897, she joined her husband in South Africa and worked there till 1914. Along with her husband, she led the women’s satyagraha there for which she was imprisoned.

She looked after her husband when he undertook a twenty-one day fast in February 1943. Her health gradually broke down and she died in detention on 22 February 1944. During her entire life she worked whole-heartedly for the welfare of people and the removal of untouchability. She lived a simple and austere life.

1939 में राजकोट सत्याग्रह में भाग लेने के लिए उन्हें गिरफ्तार किया गया और उन्हें तभी मुक्त किया गया जब गाँधीजी ने अपना उपवास शुरू किया। उन्हें अगस्त 1942 में जब वे अपने पति की गिरफ्तारी के विरुद्ध एक सभा को सम्बोधित करने जा रही थीं, पुनः गिरफ्तार किया गया और उन्हें पूना में उनके पति के साथ बन्दीगृह में रखा गया। फरवरी 1943 में जब गाँधीजी ने 21 दिन का उपवास का व्रत किया तब उन्होंने गाँधीजी की खूब देखभाल की। धीरे-धीरे उनका स्वास्थ्य खराब होता गया और 11 फरवरी, 1944 को उन्होंने बंदीगृह में ही प्राण त्याग दिये। अपने सम्पूर्ण जीवन में वे पूर्णत: हार्दिक रूप से जन कल्याण के लिए व छुआछूत मिटाने के लिए कार्य करती रहीं। उन्होंने एक सादा व संयमी जीवन बिताया।
