Factual Passages

Q. 1. Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.

The first computer was built in the early nineteenth century by Charles Babbage. He called it a ‘difference engine’: It could carry out long calculations and print the results. Later he invented a better machine called an ‘analytical engine’. The computer that you use has been developed by several scientists working independently or as a team. It is being improved everyday.

The computer can work out calculations and provide answers to complicated problems in a flash. A man would take days, or even months, to work the same thing out. But it cannot do things on its own. All the information it needs to do something is fed into it. This information is called data. Then it must be given clear and precise instructions about what to do with this data. These instructions have to be in a language that the computer understands. The information and the instructions make up a computer program. If a computer gives an incorrect answer, something must be wrong with the programme and not with the machine.

The computer also has a memory. It can store away information and use it later. It can, therefore, be compared to the human brain. But it can solve problems much faster and more accurately than the human brain. It can be made to play games like chess and can translate words from one language to another. (If you like, it can correct your spelling mistakes in what you write.) But it cannot take decisions or think up new deas. That is where it cannot compete with the human brain.

The cock was their enemy, they thought. “The cock is a nuisance,” said one maid to another, “Why don’t we get rid of it ? ”

“How ?” asked her friends. “If we wring its neck and kill it, there will be no one to disturb us in our sleep. We could get up late every morning and then our mistress would not be able to say anything to us. ”

“A good idea”, cried the others. One of the maids, therefore, quietly caught hold of the bird and killed it. As a result, the next morning they were able to sleep late. The old woman slept late too, as there was no cock to wake her up. She woke up at last to discover how late it was, and that the cock was dead. She was, of course, angry, not only because she had lost her bird but also because her routine for the day had been upset.

She thought of a plan. From that day onwards she began to keep a watch herself at nights, making up for her loss of sleep by resting during the day. And as she kept watch, she went at odd hours of the night to wake up her maids so that they did not get their usual hours of sleep.

The maids found that they were worse off now.

“This is very bad”, said they. “Now the old woman wakes us up at all odd hours. We thought we had solved our problem by killing the cock. But we have not.”

Discipline must be enforced early in life. Discipline at home makes for the future greatness of a child. It forms his character and makes him a fit citizen. The child who is allowed all sorts of exercises like running in sun, exposing himself to cold, eating unwholesome things will fall ill very frequently. A child whose habits have been disciplined and who has been taught to rise early, attend to his lessons properly, take physical exercise at the proper time and avoid things that are injurious will grow up to be a useful member of the society. We create a lot of noise not only to show that we are in a happy, festive mood, to canvass votes, to advertise a commodity or a point of view, but also for its own sake. Noise is the greatest bane of modern life. Every moment of our lives we are being distracted by it, necessary noise, unnecessary noise, purposeful noise and the purposeless, enough to weaken our nerves and madden us. The noise in and around us is wearing us out at a terrific pace.

[2] Someone noted recently that present-day babies are peculiarly loud-throated. They look elegant and sweet, no doubt, but the moment they open their mouths they let out a shattering volume of sound. School teachers do their best from the beginning by ordering every few seconds in the classroom, ‘silence, silence’. But it does not appear to have any effect on children. They remain the noisiest creatures on the earth. I think there will be an all-round benefit if a period of absolute silence is introduced in every class time table with a prize at the end of the year for the softest spoken person in the school.

[3] Hawking in the streets has, of late, become a little too much. It seems impossible to concentrate on any study.or writing at home, particularly if one’s window looks over’a street. Even if one retires to the back of the house, one may not be saved, since the hawker seems to set the pitch of his voice on the basis that you should be searched out and pierced through and through, even if you are hiding in the innermost recess of the house.

[14] At the moment I am writing this I see and hear two plantain-sellers coming on each other’s heels, almost trying to bark each other out of existence. I fear that ‘Grow More Food’ campaign has brought in only more plantains since I notice two more hawkers coming in with the same commodity. Now for a variation, I suppose, a seeker of old paper and empty bottles is expressing his wish in a rich, space-filling voice, a knife-grinder is employing an anguished cry like one caught in a trap and many others follow; all that we understand is that they are shouting something, it may be anything from gingerly oil-cake to lotus flowers, brinjals and bangles. We are surrounding by a moving loud market all the time.

[5] I have dread of living next to a man owning a motor cycle. When a motor cyclist starts out, the agitation he creates lasts half-an-hour, even after the machine itself has gone out of sight. On Sundays this enthusiast tests and touches up his engine, whereupon the whole locality is converted into a sort of gold factory. I say gold factory because, in my experience, it is the most deafening place on earth when the ore is pulverized before being treated with cyanide. This was all I could catch of the whole process when I visited a gold-mine some years ago. My guide was explaining everything to me in great detail, but I could only see his lips move, there was such a clatter all around. It has been the same experience for me in any factory.

[6] I have often been taken around many types of factories, but as my guides move their lips. I give up all attempts at knowing how cotton or silk is converted into yarn and fabric. The noise of machinery is always at a higher scale than the voice of the guide, a fact which is generally overlooked by those who take people around factories. While all the explanation is going on, my mind keeps feasting on visions of a zone of silence.

[7] I abandoned a very comfortable house once because of a neighbour who switched on his radio every morning at five, long before even the gates were unlocked in any radio station. The result of such an early switching on was that the radio (the neighbour’s) kept up a sort of humming, a most harassing accompaniment, unbroken like the humming of a thousand bees. I fear that this simile may mislead my readers by its poetic association, but, far from it, this humming was like the skewering of one’s brain by many instruments of torture, something like a pneumatic drill operating at one’s temples.

[8] Why my neighbour should have queued up so early in the day in order to receive a radio programme was a thing I could never understand. Its only effect was to make me get up early since I did not like to lie in bed wallowing in uncheritable neighbourly thoughts the first thing in the day. Moreover I was not without hope since a friend who knows all about radios told me that my neighbour’s habit of switching on the radio when the transmitter was still cold was the surest way of destroying the valves, if not the radio itself ………. But nothing occurred along those happy lines, and I had to move on.

[9] I sometimes feel that God, who constructed the human body with so much forethought seems to have become weary when he came to the ears, and left them as the most vulnerable portion of a human being. The result is that we spend all our hours longing for something that we cannot attain, namely silence.

J.C. Bose Summary, Pronunciation & Translation

[1] A little boy was admitted to St. Xavier’s School in Calcutta (now Kolkata). The boys at the school were much amused to have in their company a ‘new boy who could hardly converse in English. One day, when the other boys were making fun of this new boy, he suddenly jumped at one of his attackers and surprisingly emerged as a brave boy and won the respect and admiration of the other boys. This boy learnt a great lesson that day. “Success doesn’t fall into one’s lap. It is to be earned through great pains and struggle.’

[2] This boy was Jagadish Chandra Bose, who was born on the 30th of November 1858 in Faridpur district Decca (now in Bangladesh). Things around him made him curious. Why does the wind blow? Why does the water flow? Why are plants green? etc. were the questions that often struck his mind. Seeing his curiosity, his father Bhagwan Chandra Bose, admitted him to the St. Xavier’s Calcutta at the age of nine. Later he emerged as a great Indian scientist.

[3] It was the 10th of May, 1901, and some eminent scientists had gathered in the great hall of the Royal Society in London. Jagdish Chandra Bose was going to demonstrate that plants have feelings like we have. He claimed that plants can feel pain. Most of the scientists present could not believe it, as they had doubts. Bose was adamant about it, so he injected a poison into a plant. According to his claim, the plant would soon show signs of death. But nothing happened. However, Bose calmly announced, “The poison has failed to affect the plant. So I believe it would not hurt me either.” As the audience looked on in horror, he injected the poison into himself. Suddenly a man appeared on the scene and confessed that he had replaced the poison with similar coloured water.

[4] Bose, repeated the experiment with a real poison. This time the plant’s pulse beat showed movement on the screen of an instrument and it ultimately died. However the Royal Society was not convinced and was not ready to accept the result. But Bose would not give up easily. So he took up the challenge and after years of rigorous research he published an article, ‘Response in the Living and Non-Living’. This article convinced the Royal Society. Consequently Bose was awarded the fellowship of the Royal Society in 1920.

[5] Although more famous as a biologist, Bose was a great physicist as well. He can rightly be called the inventor of wireless telegraphy. Though Marconi invented the wireless. Bose had already demonstrated its functioning in public in the year 1895, a year before Marconi’s patent for the telegraph. This impressed the Royal Society of England and he was honoured with the degree of ‘Doctor of Science’. In fact, Bose was a pioneer in multimedia communication. He was the first to fabricate the device that generated radio wave-length.

[6] Another example of Bose’s greatness is revealed in the invention of the radar. Bose worked out some details of very great importance which are used in the working of the radar. Jagadish Chandra Bose has a permanent place in the world of science, especially in botany.

[7] He began the age of Modern Science in India and deserves honour for this. He was a great scientist, who selflessly dedicated his findings to the further development of science. An inventor can make lakhs ‘ of rupees by just one or two inventions. Bose has invented many instruments. They have since been used by many industries. When he was offered money for these he did not accept it. He felt that knowledge was not anybody’s personal property. He permitted anyone and everyone to use the fruits of his work.
